Nothing beats a freshly cut Christmas tree -- the pine-y smell and sticky needles bring us back to fond childhood memories. And these days, trees are often grown in sustainable farms and, post-holiday, are mulched and distributed to local parks.

But it’s not all merry and bright: Real trees require regular watering and sweeping up of all those fallen needles. Also, they are messy and heavy to drag into and out of the house.

All of this work may be well worth it to holiday devotees. But every year the selection of faux trees gets bigger and better. One of my favorites are the large white faux trees, seen primarily in mail-order catalogs. These stunning examples bring back images of 1950s Hollywood glam with twinkling lights and shimmery branches. Delivered to your door and easy to assemble, they require only a designated storage location when not in use. If drama is what is on your holiday décor menu, consider winter white your new best friend.
